YWCA Spokane Rebrands Annual Campaign & Event

At YWCA Spokane, we have the privilege to invite and inspire activism and engagement toward a world of true equity for all — and we have a responsibility to ensure that is reflected in the names we use. Names are important. Names have the power to invite or to exclude, to inspire or to disempower.

We strive to keep being inclusive in our language and campaigns. Since 2015, we have invited and inspired activists, advocates, and allies to join us to eliminate racism through our annual Stand Against Racism event. This name has served its purpose in the last eight years of uniting our efforts against racism, but it was time to reassess this campaign’s message as we continue to evolve and learn and adjust.

As we further our own learning in our collective mission to advance justice, our Stand Against Racism event has been rebranded as Equity For All. The word ‘stand’ evokes feelings of ableism, exclusivity, and disempowerment. YWCA USA gave each association the option to either keep the previous name or change their campaign name. We chose to align with YWCA USA’s rebranding to more clearly demonstrate that not only are we against racism, we are FOR equity for all.

Please join us this April for our Equity For All event. This year we will have performances by Rogers High School’s step team and singer/songwriter, Latrice Williams. The panel discussion of mental wellness in our communities of color will include Mariah Brigman, founder of Yoyot Sp’q’n’i, Deekon Jones, Nez Perce Tribal Member, and Ciara May, MSW, LSWAIC, with Charina Corothers, LCSW, as their moderator. The night’s host will be Dr. Claudine Richardson,  PhD and founder of Neima Educational Partnerships.

Light refreshments and water stations will be provided. Interpretation for American Sign Language will be available at the venue. Captions will be available for the virtual audience. The in-person venue has gender-specific restrooms, is ADA compliant, and accessible by STA routes 42, 43, and 66. This event will also be streamed online for virtual audience engagement.

As an organization dedicated to advancing justice for all, it’s our responsibility to ensure everyone is included in the movement and inspired to take part in advancing justice in community with us.  The Equity Challenge that usually follows the April event has also been rebranded as the Racial Justice Challenge and moved to September. Learn more here: ywcaspokane.org/challenge/.

Together, these two movements have been rebranded to fall under the Until Justice Just Is campaign. Learn more about the UJJI campaign here: untiljusticejustis.org/.
