STCU Surprises YWCA With Local Restaurant Gift Cards

Thank you, STCU for your continued support of the women and families YWCA Spokane serves!

YWCA Philanthropy staff thank STCU for their generous surprise gift!

A number of women and families utilizing services across our agency received an unexpected gift from Spokane Teachers Credit Union (STCU) this month in the form of $50 gift cards to local restaurants.

Recognizing that restaurants, restaurant workers, and women have suffered some of the greatest financial losses of the economic fallout from the pandemic, STCU’s gift to YWCA Spokane clients was part of a larger effort to provide support for both locally owned restaurants and Spokane women who may be in need of additional food assistance.

STCU’s purchase of restaurant gift cards, and subsequent distribution to several local nonprofits, coincides with the Great Dine Out, a collaboration between the Inlander, STCU and 13 other banks and credit unions.

As reported by the Spokesman Review, the gift also coincides with women’s history month and is another way that STCU is highlighting the contributions of local female leaders and celebrating their own history of women in leadership.

An Empowering Gift

Although this gift was a surprise, it also happened to coincide with YWCA Spokane’s education and advocacy focus of this month where we are discussing the economic effects of the pandemic on women, and working to elevate empowering solutions.

YWCA Spokane staff highlight the fact that gift cards, as opposed to material items, can be especially empowering gifts for our clients because they allow the recipient to purchase exactly what she needs and likes for herself. In this way, giving a gift card not only provides the client with a physical gift but also the gift of agency over her own life, which can be especially important and meaningful for survivors of intimate partner domestic violence.
