YWCA Making Community Connections

YWCA In THE COMMUNITY

YWCA Spokane realizes the benefit of collaboration with local partners in order to better serve women, children, and families in Spokane who are impacted by domestic violence, homelessness, and unemployment.

That is why we have been hard at work to develop and nurture partnerships with local agencies and business who care about our community and align with YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.

Outreach and Education

Prevention, education, and spreading awareness about YWCA Spokane’s free services is an important part of our work. Each month we attend community fairs, speak at group events, and facilitate workshops. Some topics include how to response in the work place to a domestic violence situation, domestic violence 101, and healthy relationships.

Below is a snapshot of recent community outreach and education events and activities:

  • Providence – YWCA Resource and Domestic Violence Response Training for primary care and psychiatry residency physicians  at the Spokane Teaching Health Center
  • Hilton Double Tree – community engagement and staff volunteer partnerships
  • MEDEX Gonzaga – “In Her Shoes” domestic violence simulation training for admin staff
  • YMCA – Collaboration for domestic violence resource awareness in facilities
  • Holmes Elementary Closing House Event – YWCA booth and prevention activities for over 400 children, teachers, and guardians
  • West Central Community Center – Neighbor Day Festival YWCA booth, monthly after school prevention activities
  • Family Safety and Wellness Fair – Engagement with Airway Heights children and parents
  • PRIDE – City Hall Pride flag raising, PRIDE Parade and resource booth
  • SNAP – resource awareness meeting  and domestic violence training
  • Юнайтед Вэй – volunteer recruitment and outreach
  • Spokane Humane Society – Parade of Paws, YWCA education and awareness booth
  • Transitions – Domestic Violence 101 Training for agency staff and collaboration meetings

Women’s Economic Empowerment

YWCA’s Women’s Opportunity Center is focused on providing a safe space to learn new skills, build confidence, receive needed resources, and launch into economic empowerment.  The Center includes Гардероб нашей сестры, Основы, and a job readiness program called Женщины на работу.

At YWCA we understand that it can be difficult for those who need our services to make it to our facility while also achieving various other goals. It can also be difficult to fully understand how beneficial our services can be before meeting with a staff member directly. That’s why we have been working to bring our friendly staff out into the community to make it easier for our clients to connect with us and our services.

A few of the locations potential clients can learn more and sign up for services include Community Courts and the Downtown Spokane Public Library, Catholic Charities, Spokane Falls Community College, and Hope House.

If you would like a YWCA Economic Empowerment Advocate to visit women within you community or agency to discuss job readiness services, please contact Kelly Mathews at kellym@ywcaspkane.org or call 509-789-9281.
