Meet Anita – Women’s History Month 2025

During Women's History Month, we want to celebrate a few of our amazing staff members who are actively creating our history every day!

Women’s History Month (WHM) was first celebrated on a national level in 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987, Congress designated the month of March as Women’s History Month and it has been continued through presidential proclamations ever since. Learn more at womenshistorymonth.gov.

Meet Anita!

Anita Sather has been with YWCA Spokane since 2023 as a paralegal. Within our Civil Legal Department, she supports attorneys and legal interns who offer free assistance, advice, and legal representation to survivors of intimate partner domestic violence.

What first drew you to YWCA Spokane?

The Mission of YWCA. I needed a change of career and I wanted to move to something that truly made a difference in our community.

What do you wish more people knew about YWCA Spokane?

Our dedication to social causes. Due to recent changes in government policy, critical funding and services are increasingly at risk. More and more I am asked, "How can I help the YWCA, how can I stand with the YWCA, and how are we going to continue forward." All these changes underscore the critical services we provided to marginalized communities and reinforces our role as steadfast advocates for social justice.

What is your favorite part of your role?

The law. I love the rules and orders. Its definitely not black and white. Its dynamic. Always interpreted, sometimes misused, and cited frequently. I wanted to be law enforcement initially but I am smitten with being a paralegal. To be able to support your client's ability to stand before the court with knowledge and paperwork is amazing, a great sense of empowerment. I love being available to work with clients and address their questions and concerns. The law is complex and confusing, I am here to help.

How does your work live out YWCA Spokane's values of equity, empowerment, collaboration, and innovation?

We are constantly in motion and evolving. The Y changes with the community, with our staff, and with current issues impacting our community. We are at ease with change and more willing to try different strategies within our agency and with our clients as we progress. We continually think ahead, prepare, imagine and design ways to assist our entire community and the world around us.

Какими тремя словами можно описать YWCA Спокан?

The Three R’s of Social Justice comes to mind: Rights, Resources, and Respect. In my terms, I would say Advocacy, Community, and Opportunity.
