Thank you to Gonzaga University’s Theatre and Dance Department for your benefit performance of The Vagina Monologues!

On February 14th, Gonzaga University’s Theatre and Dance Department hosted a benefit performance of The Vagina Monologues to benefit our Domestic Violence Safe Shelter. Their performance consisted of Gonzaga students, faculty, staff, YWCA Spokane staff members, and community members alike. The performance sold out the day before the performance, making it the second time in Gonzaga Theatre history that a show has sold out prior to the doors opening the night of the performance. They raised $2,300 and collected feminine hygiene products for our Domestic Violence Safe Shelter! We are so thankful to GU’s Theatre and Dance Department for their commitment to our agency. A special thanks to the show director, Assistant Professor of Theatre Leslie Stamoolis, for taking on this project!

This performance was the first time The Vagina Monologues had been performed on campus in over a decade, and it was the first time the show was open to the public. We deeply appreciate Professor Stamoolis, the cast, and the crew for their dedication to empowering women in our community through this play.

Also a landmark occasion, this was the first time 1 Billion Rising was performed on Gonzaga’s campus, and the first time YWCA Spokane and Gonzaga partnered for the event. At the end of the play, the cast performed a flash mob of the 1 Billion Rising Dance to “Break the Chain” with Gonzaga’s Dance Department to bring awareness to the 1 billion people on the earth who will experience sexual assault. The audience had the opportunity to join in the dancing and honor those who experience sexual assault as well as empower the community to “break the chain” on sexual assault.
