An annual courageous conversation designed to build bridges toward equity

Building Bridges toward Equity

Every year, YWCA agencies across the nation hold free public events focused on furthering the agency's mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. Each event is designed to foster open, honest courageous conversations about topics related to our work and mission and identify ways we can move forward together.

The goal of this annual, free, public event is to unite our community in a bold demonstration that delivers a clear message: we are on a mission to eliminate racism. Each courageous conversation provides an opportunity to broaden perspectives, learn new tools, and connect with a diverse community of citizens passionate about eliminating racism in our community.

Previously Stand Against Racism Names are important and have the power to invite or to exclude, to inspire or to disempower.

At YWCA Spokane, we have an opportunity to invite and inspire activism and engagement toward a world of true equity for all — and we have a responsibility to ensure that is reflected in the names we use.

In an effort to be more inclusive in our language, we changed the name of this annual event from 'Stand Against Racism' to 'Equity for All'. While the event itself has long united us against racism, we acknowledge that the word “stand” evokes feelings of ableism, exclusivity, and disempowerment. As an organization dedicated to advancing justice for all, it’s our responsibility to ensure that all are included in the movement and inspired to take part in advancing justice in partnership with us.

Day 4: Second Amendment Protections

The Second Amendment says all Americans can own guns, but minority communities often face more gun violence and unfair treatment under gun laws. Historically and today, Black, Indigenous, and Latino people are more likely to be victims and less likely to benefit equally from gun rights due to systemic inequality.
