2025 Youth Self-Care Summit Recap
2025 Youth Self-Care Summit Recap
The fourth annual Youth Self-Care Summit was held on Saturday, December 13th.
The Youth Self-Care Summit is a special one day celebration brought to the community through a partnership between YWCA Spokane and Сильные женщины, достигающие величия (SWAG). The Summit brings youth together to participate in interactive workshops that teach fundamental self-care skills. Workshop facilitators center the unique experiences of young women of color, providing youth the opportunity to build community with their peers.
This year, the summit included a keynote speech by Jaime Stacy, director of SWAG, and workshops focused on self-care and community care facilitated by local leaders, Kameisha Williams, Prosparetti Coleman, and Priya Mhlophe.
Keynote by Jaime Stacy
Youth joining the summit were welcomed with lunch and a keynote speech from Jaime Stacy, founder of SWAG. Jaime shares how the word strong in its definition challenges the pressure many young women of color feel to take care of others without accepting help. Jaime highlights that by learning to take care of themselves and ask for help, youth are able to build capacity for helping others. We are all strongest when in community with others.
The Power of Beauty
Kameisha “Meme” Williams led a transformative self-care workshop focused on cultivating a positive mindset and embracing personal confidence. As a hairstylist, educator, and wellness advocate, she emphasized the importance of daily routines and self-talk in building inner strength. Participants learned that when you look good, you feel good—and that preparation, whether through skincare, makeup, or simply taking time for yourself, boosts confidence and sets a positive tone for the day.
Meme encouraged youth to develop habits that reflect the person they aspire to be, reminding them that confidence is rooted in character, not a title. She stressed the importance of self-love, noting, “There is absolutely nothing wrong with loving who you are.” She also tackled the challenge of imposter syndrome, assuring everyone that their worth isn’t defined by others’ opinions.
The session also included practical tips, such as a five-step skincare and makeup routine, as well as insights into how self-care practices can nurture mental and physical well-being. Meme urged participants to honor their individuality, affirming that confidence radiates positivity and attracts the same in return. With a powerful reminder to “leave the space better than you found it,” she inspired youth to take care of themselves, their community, and to always choose self-love as a foundation.
Creating My Care Plan
Prosparetti Coleman led a grounding and intentional self-care workshop rooted in awareness, reflection, and daily practice. As a community educator, advocate, and doula—and the Founder of I Hear You Sis—she drew from culturally resonant, body-centered approaches to guide participants in creating personalized care plans that support mental well-being and emotional regulation. Her facilitation emphasized honoring individual experiences while recognizing the power of collective healing and shared wisdom.
Participants began by catching the good moments, practicing gratitude, noticing what brings joy, and celebrating personal accomplishments as a way to shift mindset and build resilience. Prosparetti then guided youth in developing awareness of energy, helping them identify what nourishes them versus what drains them, and emphasizing awareness as the foundation for balance, preparation, and self-regulation.
The workshop encouraged participants to respond to their needs by checking in with themselves and resetting through journaling, affirmations, art, reading, or simple body awareness. Prosparetti emphasized that self-care is not one-size-fits-all, inviting youth to find practices that truly work for them. The session concluded with a focus on embodying care—grounding self-care in daily rituals and asking, “What do I do for myself every day?” Through this embodied and reflective approach, participants were empowered to cultivate sustainable habits that support healing, connection, and overall well-being.
From Me to We: Community Care
Priya Mhlophe facilitated a collaborative and reflective workshop centered on the relationship between self-care, community care, and mental well-being. As the Director of Student Success, Equity, and Diversity at Spokane Community College and an advisor to the NAACP Youth Council, she guided youth in understanding that self-care means intentionally putting energy toward oneself, while community care requires collective effort and shared responsibility.
Through a hands-on activity, youth worked together to design community gardens, emphasizing collaboration, creativity, and shared vision. Each group named their garden highlighting the diversity of perspectives in the room. Guided reflection encouraged participants to identify the unique strengths they bring to their communities, such as communication, creativity, idea-sharing, and teamwork. As one participant shared, “We put all our ideas together to make a better one.”
Priya reinforced that every individual plays a vital role in their community, reminding participants that spaces are made stronger by their presence. The workshop concluded with an affirmation exchange, where youth wrote uplifting messages on small flags and placed them in gardens created by other groups. Reading the affirmations aloud sparked feelings of importance, and connection. The reminder of how positive words and intentional care can impact both individual well-being and the strengthen our community.
Closing out the Summit
The summit concluded with all youth coming together to participate in a raffle and collect self-care goody bags. From initial nerves to a room full of conversation, laughter, and connection, one participant reflected on that transformation, sharing, “Today’s been really good actually. I was kind of scared to come back but I’m really glad I did! I was scared I wouldn’t know anybody.”
Throughout the day, youth explored how self-care and community care are deeply connected. Participants reminded one another that “you can’t take care of your community if you can’t take care of yourself,” while Priya emphasized that “for self-care, you only need yourself. Community care requires others.” Youth engaged in meaningful reflection, asking each other what unique strengths they bring to their communities and what each person can do to contribute, strengthening the idea that care is both personal and collective.
Workshops encouraged participants to see themselves as valuable and worthy just as they are. Messages like “I have the opportunity to show up well today,” “when you choose you, you don’t have to worry about being chosen,” and “you are not good at something—you yourself are good,” grounded the day in confidence and self-affirmation. Youth reflected on how the foundations they set now will support them in the future, and how authenticity and self-belief shape how they move through the world.
Community-building was a central theme, with participants recognizing that collaboration and difference strengthen collective spaces. As one reflection shared, “Gardens don’t grow by accident. Everyone contributes collectively and it shows,” while another participant affirmed that “our differences is what makes us beautiful.” Youth discussed how reassuring one another, offering encouragement, and expressing belief in someone are powerful forms of care that help people feel seen and human.
The summit closed with a shared understanding that community care also means learning more about yourself and those around you. Participants were reminded to “just be you, day in and out,” and to be a light in the world, knowing that even small acts of care can make a meaningful difference. Youth left the summit not only with self-care tools, but with deeper connections, a stronger sense of belonging, and the confidence to carry that care into their families, friendships, and communities.
