Supporting Youth Recap: Pathways Forward
Supporting Youth Recap: Pathways Forward
On February 27, as part of our ティーンデート暴力啓発月間 (TDVAM) campaign, we held another Pathways Forward discussion to educate our community on the impact of teen dating violence and the unique needs of youth survivors.
This conversation was moderated by Chloe Bolz (YWCA Prevention Specialist) and featured Maribel Ortega (Mujeres in Action Youth Advocate) and Kami LaMoreaux (Spokane Regional Domestic Violence Coalition Prevention Coordinator).
How We Can Support Youth Survivors
The majority of young people experiencing dating violence do not disclose their experiences—this needs to change. Supportive adults can create safe spaces for youth to open up by:
- Recognizing the signs of dating violence, including:
- A loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed,
- Unexplained bruises or injuries,
- Isolation from friends and family,
- Excessive control from a partner (constant texting, monitoring),
- Sudden changes in appearance or behavior.
- Starting conversations early and often. Encourage open discussions about the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships.
- Asking open-ended questions. Instead of making assumptions, ask: “How do you feel about your relationship?” or “What do you think a respectful relationship looks like?”
- Avoiding labels. Instead of calling someone abusive, focus on specific behaviors you’ve observed that raise concern.
- Believing and supporting youth when they disclose abuse. Your reaction can make all the difference.
Empowering youth to make their own choices. Avoid ultimatums and work together to decide next steps.
Did you know, 1 in 3 teens experience some form of dating violence before reaching adulthood?
