Goodwill SSVF Commits to DV Education
At YWCA Spokane, our commitment to ending domestic violence extends beyond providing direct services to survivors. We also work to build a community that understands the complexities of abuse, supports healing, and takes action to prevent future harm.
Whether that's through larger campaigns such as Domestic Violence Action Month or through conversations at community events, we aim to decrease the stigma around domestic violence increase understanding about healthy relationships. One meaningful way to deepen the dialogue is through education.
YWCA offers free, virtual domestic violence education sessions that are open to anyone in the community. Beyond foundational information, as the Engagement Lead, I also facilitate customized trainings for organizations, businesses, and community groups that want to better support those experiencing abuse.
Thank You Goodwill SSVF for Supporting Survivors
This summer, Goodwill Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) reached out seeking education for their staff. This team of 40 works with about 400 veterans who may be unhoused or experiencing instability. During home and office visits, staff encountered situations involving relationship violence and reached out to YWCA to strengthen their response and support of their clients.
I sat down with Brian Blitz, SSVF Assistant Program Manager, to learn more about their supportive services and learning objectives. We decided to begin with a Domestic Violence 101 training to cover foundational topics including recognizing signs of abuse, debunking common myths, and referring clients to YWCA Spokane's services. A few weeks later, I returned to facilitate a tailored Domestic Violence 201 training, focused on addressing real scenarios and complexities that Brian's staff encounter in their work with veterans.
"Partnering with the YWCA on these trainings has been very beneficial," shared Brian afterward. "In my nearly five years with Goodwill SSVF I have attended dozens of training sessions; I can’t recall a time when there’s been more interest in the training among our staff and genuine enthusiasm to learn more and share as a team."
Making Space for Deeper Conversations
Custom training sessions like this allow for nuances to be unearthed. Participants can share real experiences and explore dynamics specific to their work. Specific questions get shared which ensure the training really meets their needs. I am so appreciative of Brian and SSVF for seeking out more education and for working with me to make this training as impactful for staff as it could be.
"I can’t speak highly enough of this training, and the work the YWCA is doing in our community."
- Brian Blitz, SSVF Assistant Program Manager
