Questions

If you have any questions about volunteering at our agency, please contact our Community Engagement department.

Community Impact

Due to the sensitive nature of our work, most volunteer opportunities do not involve direct engagement with clients. Even then, approximately 200 community members volunteer with us each year, giving over 3,000 hours of their time. This contribution makes an incredible difference in our community!

Volunteer Opportunities

We hold various events throughout the year and often need a group of volunteers who can help with various duties for a few hours on certain days. We also have special projects in need of specific support, depending on our programs at given times.

Opportunities include:

  • Setup before, support during, and clean up afterwards for key events:
    • Women of Achievement awards luncheon, March.
    • An Evening In Tuscany, summer.
    • Equity For All Event, April.
    • Hope for the Holidays wishlist program, December.
  • Helping with special projects, such as:
    • Planting and gardening at our safe shelter
    • Installing new furniture at our safe shelter
    • Assisting with a special food or necessity drive

Our Sister’s Closet is YWCA Spokane’s free, donation-based, women’s clothing boutique serving the local community through one-on-one shopping appointments and care packages for clients in need of emergency items. The success of this program is reliant on volunteers who are willing to commit to a consistent schedule for 6 months or more.

Opportunities include:

  • Conducting styling appointments as a personal shopper with two clients shopping the boutique at a time
  • Sorting and curating donations received to ensure the boutique stays well stocked with quality items

We hold fundraising and community engagement events throughout the year. Each event requires a planning committee consisting of staff, board members, and volunteer community members who all meet regularly leading up to the event. Depending on the event type and schedule, this opportunity may require a commitment of 3 - 9 months.

Day 6: White Supremacy & Gun Violence

White supremacy’s link to gun violence is alarming, with incidents like the Christchurch and Pittsburgh shootings highlighting this trend. Perpetrators often act out of racial hatred, using guns to target specific communities. Addressing this requires stricter gun control, better education, and improved online content monitoring.

Day 5: Pay Gap & Unpaid Labor

The gender pay gap is significantly influenced by unpaid caregiving, primarily done by women. This unpaid work, including child and elder care, leads to career interruptions and lower wages due to part-time work and reduced hours. Recognizing and valuing caregiving in policies is crucial to closing the pay gap.
