Why Pride?

Pride is both a celebration and a call to action—honoring how far the LGBTQIA2S+ community has come while recommitting to the work of building a world where everyone can live freely and safely.

About Pride

Pride celebrates the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, and others) community, honoring its history, culture, identities, and ongoing fight for rights and equality.

Pride Month is held every June in the United States and in many parts of the world to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising of June 1969 in New York City—a pivotal moment in the LGBTQIA+ rights movement.

About Pride

Why Celebrate

  • History: Pride honors past struggles, including the activism of trans women of color like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who were central to the early gay liberation movement.
  • Progress: It celebrates legal and social gains—such as marriage equality and anti-discrimination protections—while recognizing there is still more work to be done.
  • Community: Pride creates space for people to connect, heal, and find solidarity in shared experiences.

Why It Matters

  • Affirmation: For many LGBTQIA2S+ people, Pride is a rare chance to feel safe, affirmed, and embraced just as they are.
  • Awareness & Advocacy: Pride raises public consciousness about ongoing issues like anti-LGBTQIA+ violence, discriminatory laws, and mental health disparities.
  • Resistance: It serves as a powerful reminder that LGBTQIA2S+ people have always existed and will continue to resist erasure and oppression.
  • Hope & Joy: Amid hardship, Pride is also a celebration of queer joy, resilience, love, and authenticity.
