Connect and Reflect

Discover a unique way to reflect, learn, and take action.

We invite you to experience our StoryWalk art exhibit on Snxw Meneɂ (the island in Riverfront Park) this October.

This interactive installation features poetry from people on their healing journey after domestic violence paired with artwork by local artists. At each of the 15 stations that are displayed along a scenic walking path, you’ll find conversation prompts designed to spark meaningful dialogue about what healthy and unhealthy relationships can look like.

We hope you engage friends and family in this rewarding experience any time this October in Riverfront Park. Take a walk, start a conversation, and see what happens.

Let's Normalize Talk about Relationships

We believe no one is too young or too old to think about what a healthy relationship feels like. Everyone has wisdom to share, no matter their age or role.

Prompts to get you Talking

Getting the Conversation Started

Notice Relationship Patterns

Practice Communication Skills

Support Each Other and Yourself

Por qué esto importa

Too often, domestic violence is seen as a private issue that isn’t openly discussed. This silence creates stigma.

The StoryWalk offers a safe and approachable way to begin those conversations through art, poetry, and reflection. By walking the path, you and your family, friends, or coworkers are invited to:

  • Reflect on the qualities of safe, supportive relationships.
  • Explore how unhealthy patterns can impact wellbeing.
  • Learn how communication and care can strengthen connections.
  • Take part in building a community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

Together, we can create a community that values safety, respect, and care in every relationship.

Additional Resources

Conversations about relationships can feel new or even a little intimidating, and you don’t have to do it alone. The resources below offer tools, guides, and activities to help you keep learning, spark healthy dialogue with friends and family, and find support when needed.

Learn about Healthy Relationships

  • How’s Your Relationship? – WSCADV – Accessible conversation guides from the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

  • About Power & Control – YWCA Spokane offers tools to help you understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors.

Talk with Children and Teens

  • Love is Respect – National resource for teens and young adults exploring healthy, unhealthy, and abusive relationship dynamics. Includes quizzes, conversation starters, and support options.
  • Start Strong: Building Healthy Teen Relationships – Tips and activities to help adults support teens in developing safe and respectful relationships.

  • Love Like This – Coloring Pages – A family-friendly activity that introduces young children to ideas about kindness, respect, and friendship.

About the Poetry in this Exhibit

The poetry and prose highlighted throughout the StoryWalk exhibit this October comes from survivors participating in a writing workshop series offered by YWCA Spokane called The Thread.

About The Thread

The Thread is a free writing workshop series offered in YWCA's Centro de oportunidades para mujeres to survivors of intimate partner domestic violence.

In a recent blog post, Teresa Dixon, workshop facilitator at YWCA Spokane , shares why this workshop is such a valuable way for survivors to reclaim their story, heal, and move forward.

Each month, The Thread welcomes a guest community writer to join the workshop. This October we welcome Jenny Davis to the class.
