Nominate Great Women In Spokane For YWCA Spokane’s 36th Annual Women of Achievement Awards

YWCA Spokane is calling for nominations for its 2018 Women of Achievement Awards. The deadline for submissions has been extended to June 29!

For 36 years at this annual luncheon, YWCA Spokane has celebrated successful women in the community for their achievements along with their commitment to giving back. This year, the event will be held at the Davenport Grand Hotel, 333 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. on Thursday, Oct. 4. Established with the goal of increasing community awareness and appreciation for the diverse contributions of women leaders in Spokane, YWCA Spokane has honored more than 200 amazing women in the region at this luncheon over the years.

“Spokane is home to amazing women who are a force of positive change in our community,” says Regina Malveaux, Chief Executive Officer of YWCA Spokane. “We are honored to provide this opportunity to recognize these women and share their examples of furthering the YWCA mission of empowering women and eliminating racism.”

Nomination Requirements

Winners of a YWCA Women of Achievement Award embody the mission of the YWCA Spokane by giving generously of themselves to make Spokane a better place for all citizens to live. They also demonstrate leadership through their professional work or service to the community.

The YWCA Spokane encourages nominations for the Women of Achievement awards in the following areas:

Raising Awareness

“This luncheon allows us to honor successful women who are making a difference in our community, but also an opportunity to raise awareness about critical issues,” says Mireya Fitzloff, YWCA Spokane Women of Achievement Luncheon Co-Chair and YWCA Spokane board member. “We want to demonstrate our commitment to supporting women, children, and families and combating racism.”

This year’s luncheon will feature a keynote address that focuses on domestic violence and its impact on families, particularly children. In the ten years between 2006 and 2015, 563 people died in Washington state as a result of intimate partner violence.

Author and filmmaker Gloria Norris will speak about her childhood, which was shaped by violence, love, and ultimately, triumph. She details her life in her memoir, the Oprah Book Club selection, Kookooland.

The Women of Achievement luncheon has evolved into YWCA Spokane’s largest fundraising event, sponsored by over 25 companies and organizations each year, and is one of the area’s most prestigious award recognition events for women.

YWCA Spokane’s 2018 Women of Achievement Award Luncheon will be held at the Davenport Grand Hotel, 333 W. “All proceeds raised by this important event directly benefit the YWCA’s services for domestic violence victims and their children, including emergency shelter, counseling, legal services, job readiness, child care, and Pre-K programs for low income children,” says Malveaux.

For 115 years, YWCA Spokane has been helping women and children overcome social, economic, and personal barriers in order to accomplish their goals and achieve healthier and more fulfilling lives. Today areas of focus include supporting victims of intimate partner domestic violence, promoting early childhood education, and confronting racial and social justice issues that negatively impact our clients and our community.

In 2017, we served over 16,000 women, children and families. Services include a continuum of wrap-around support: 24-hour Helpline and Safe Shelter, Counseling Center, Mental Health Services, Child Advocacy, Civil Legal Assistance, Legal Advocacy, and Economic Empowerment Advocacy. YWCA’s Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) provides 3- and 4-year-old children with the social and learning skills necessary for successful entry into kindergarten.

By working at the intersections of inequality, poverty, and domestic violence, YWCA Spokane is able to disrupt longstanding societal patterns of trauma.
