GoodGuys Beer & Learn Recap

GoodGuys Beer & Learn was a hit!

A big thank you to our Gute Jungs founders Manny Hochheimer and Doug Kelley  for hosting this opportunity for men to join the movement to help end gender-based violence.

Special thanks to community partners like Sheriff Knezovich for joining us and sharing sobering facts about the realities of domestic violence in Spokane and its impact on women and children.

75-80% of homicides in our community are the result of domestic violence, says Sheriff Knezovich.”

He also highlighted the long-term impact domestic violence has on children in their day-to-day school life. For example, a child who has been awake all night during a traumatic domestic violence experience will likely not have the capacity to focus in class the following day.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS A  COMMUNITY EPIDEMIC

  • Domestic violence is the number 1 call to 911 in Spokane.
  • 1 in 3 women & 1 in 4 men will be victim to domestic violence in their lifetime.
  • 1490 reported children & youth were directly impacted by family violence last year; another 580 witnessed the violence.
  • Less than 15% of incidents get reported.

Facts About Domestic Violence & Spokane

MovE Into Action

We had 35 community members join in a powerful discussion focused on child welfare, male mentorship, as well as men taking action with their support through event attendance, donation of time, talents, and resources.

“This is not a woman’s issue. It is a community issue,” states, Doug Kelley. “Something that we must work together to bring an end to.”

Learn more about the growing movement of men working to prevent domestic violence and how you can get involved. Register to sit at a GoodGuys table at YWCA Spokane’s 36th annual Women of Achievement luncheon October 4th.
