Ways to Celebrate Diversity and Inclusion

Below is a list of ideas that you can do to get to know each other and each other’s culture in a group format (i.e.
work group, friend group, etc.).

1. Get a world map; identify the various counties the employees in your department have visited by using
push pins (one color for each employee) or get a map of North/South America and identify the various
states and counties your employees have visited. Include your hourly and student employees.

2. Discuss what the words: diversity, equity, inclusion, and culture mean to you. Do your group members
have the same understanding of the definition of these words?

3. Discuss comfort foods that each person eats when needing “comfort.” What memories does the food
invoke? Or if you were going to a potluck and asked to bring a food item from your culture, what would it
be and why did you choose that specific food item? Go one step further and have a luncheon potluck of
“comfort food” from your culture.

4. What food(s) do you like to eat that are from a different culture? Do you only eat it in a restaurant, or do
you make the food item at home or both? Has a person from a different culture shared a recipe from
their culture?

5. Is there a movie or book about a different culture that you liked? Discuss why they saw the movie or
read the book, what did you learn about the other culture and was it an accurate portrayal of the culture.

6. Ask each person to fill out an index card with a fact about themselves that most of their co-workers do
not know (and, of course, are willing to share). Shuffle the cards, have each participant select a card, read
the fact out loud, and try to guess who wrote it. If you can recognize the handwriting – print out the fact,
tape, or glue it to an index card.

7. Ask each person what type of music they listened to earlier that day (prior to this activity), let them
explain what it is they enjoy about this type of music, who their favorite musicians are, etc. or what type
of music they listened to growing up, have their music tastes changed.

8. Who is your favorite artist? Are they a ‘classic’ artist, a up and coming artist, local artist, etc. Are any of
the artist from a different culture? What art medium do they work in?

9. Pair up with someone from a difference culture or generation (at least two generations apart). Discuss
your childhood, what was similar to both of you, what was different?

10. Have each person bring a personal item that is important to them from home or their work space. Have
them explain the significance of the item.

11. For a generational aspect, as a group, identify those events that were headliners for a specific generation
and the impact for that generation (traditional, baby boomers, gen x, gen y). Or discuss a specific event,
what were you doing when you heard the news and the impact it had on you as a person?

12. Have each person discuss their name (first or last). Were they named after someone in their family or a
friend or how did their parent(s) decide on their name. What significant does their name have for them
and/or anything they want to say about their name (how unusual or common their name is, etc.).

13. Have each person identify their favorite holiday. Why did they choose this holiday and how do they
celebrate it?

14. Have each person identify an aroma they associate with childhood. What made the person think of this
aroma and what do they associate it with.

15. Have each person identify one event that has occurred in their life-time that they will never forget.

16. It is easy to talk about the people who inspire us — heroes, sports stars, activists, etc., but what is it about
them that causes us to be truly inspired? Name one or two women who inspire you. Why is what these
women do/did inspirational to you?

17. Storytelling is a big part of many cultures and is often devalued when told by a different culture than the
listener. Have everyone in your group tell a short story handed down by a parent/grandparent/elder. As
the listener, ask a question or two after the storyteller is done.

18. At one time or another, many persons become physically disabled temporarily due to an accident.
Discuss in a friend/group meeting, what the temporary disability was, how it impacted their daily life and
family around them. If the physically disability is temporary or is permanent, what changes were made to
accommodate the disability.

This will be the last month of section 3 for the Diversity Calendar. Starting in January 2024, I will only
have Spokane area events and national/international celebrations.
