A Collaborative Victory for Community Safety: How YWCA Spokane’s Domestic Violence Task Force Is Saving Lives

At YWCA Spokane, our commitment to empowering survivors and creating a safer community is brought to life through the work of the Spokane Regional Domestic Violence Task Force.

This dynamic coalition brings together YWCA Spokane legal advocates, the Spokane Police Department’s Domestic Violence Unit, county law enforcement, and city and county prosecutors to tackle domestic violence head-on. A recent success story underscores how this teamwork is making a real difference.

A Life-Saving Collaboration

Earlier this week, YWCA Spokane Advocate Rene took action that led to an example of this powerful collaboration. During a conversation with a survivor of intimate partner domestic violence participating in our legal advocacy program, Rene learned of the survivor’s grave concerns about firearms in their home and the potential danger posed by their partner upon their release. Acting swiftly, Rene alerted YWCA's Firearms Compliance Investigator (previously the Domestic Violence Firearms Investigative Analyst).

This crucial step set off a chain of actions that protected the survivor and removed a dangerous arsenal. Judge Johnson promptly issued an order to surrender weapons, demonstrating the importance of judicial leadership in prioritizing victim safety. Recognizing the urgency, our Investigator worked ahead of schedule, contacting Spokane Police Department officers directly. Officers Tangeman and Stadley, members of the DV Task Force, responded immediately. They met with the survivor, ensured their safety, and seized nearly two dozen firearms and other weapons from the home.

This seamless response highlights the importance of instinct, expertise, and coordination in addressing domestic violence cases. As our Investigator stated, “The victim in this case was heard by the Courts, by their Advocate Rene, and by Law Enforcement. This is a textbook-perfect example of great teamwork!”

Why This Work Matters

Domestic violence accounts for a significant portion of violent crimes in Spokane and is often a precursor to more severe violence, including homicide. By enforcing no-contact orders and orders to surrender weapons, the DV Task Force disrupts the cycle of violence, reducing risks for survivors and their families.

Since its inception, the Task Force has:

  • Increased firearm seizures from DV perpetrators.
  • Reduced assault levels by 22%.
  • Implemented best practices like the Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP) to identify high-risk cases.

Voices of Survivors

The impact of this work is best understood through the voices of survivors. One survivor shared, “I was greeted with humility, dignity, and respect that I have never encountered before. The work of the YWCA DV Task Force and police officers is critical to ensuring the safety of people like me.”

Looking Ahead

The success of the Spokane Regional Domestic Violence Task Force hinges on continued collaboration, community trust, and sustainable funding. Each victory, like the one achieved this week, reminds us of the life-saving potential of this work. Together, we are making Spokane safer, one survivor at a time.

The Second Amendment says all Americans can own guns, but minority communities often face more gun violence and unfair treatment under gun laws. Historically and today, Black, Indigenous, and Latino people are more likely to be victims and less likely to benefit equally from gun rights due to systemic inequality.
