2024 Youth Self-Care Summit

The third annual Youth Self-Care Summit was held on Saturday, December 14th.

The Youth Self-Care Summit is a special one day celebration brought to the community through a partnership between YWCA Spokane and Strong Women Achieving Greatness (SWAG). The Summit brings youth together to participate in interactive workshops that teach fundamental self-care skills. Workshop facilitators center the unique experiences of young women of color, providing youth the opportunity to build community with their peers.

This year, the summit included a keynote speech by Jaime Stacy, director of SWAG, and workshops focused on self-care and community care facilitated by local leaders, Prosparetti Coleman and Priya Osborne.

Keynote by Jaime Stacy

Youth joining the summit were welcomed with lunch and a keynote speech from Jaime Stacy, founder of SWAG. Jaime begins by defining the word strong as “confidence in understanding what your limits are, while honoring help from others.” This definition challenges the pressure many young women of color feel to take care of others without accepting help. By learning to take care of themselves and ask for help, youth are able to build capacity for helping others. We are all strongest when in community with others.

Self-Care Workshop

Prosparetti Coleman facilitated a self-care workshop helping youth understand the connection between the mind and body. Youth learned to recognize the body sensations associated with big emotions in order to more appropriately read and respond to their emotional needs. She also guided participants through a vision boarding activity complete with a collection of fun stickers.

Community Care Workshop

Priya Osborne facilitated a community care workshop focused on moving “from me to we.” Youth learned to recognize their values and skills that can be applied to uplift others in their communities. Each participant left with an artfully decorated card to give to a member of their community encouraging them to practice self-care.

Closing out the Summit

The summit concluded with all youth coming together to participate in a raffle and collect self-care goody bags. “It was so special to watch youth build community with each other throughout the summit," shared Chloe Bolz, Prevention Specialist at YWCA. "The differences between the whole group gatherings at the beginning and end of the summit was stark. The summit began with shy silences and ended filled with chatter and giggles.”

"Attending an event specifically designed for you—as a young woman of color in a predominantly white city—and gaining wisdom about caring for yourself and others, led by other women of color, is truly transformational." Said Priya Osborne. "The Youth Self-Care Summit empowers every young woman of color with the tools to use their time, skills, values, and love to transform themselves and their communities. It was especially heartwarming to see my sister attend for the first time—initially shy and uncomfortable—and leave with new friends and an overwhelming sense of love and care from her new community. Never underestimate the power of sisterhood!"

"I’m so grateful to have been part of this year’s SWAG Self-Care Summit," said Prosparetti Coleman. "It truly brought home the message that caring for yourself, your community, and your overall well-being truly matters.

What stood out most to me during the workshops was the way participants supported one another. Even in such a short amount of time, there was a deep sense of connection, sisterhood, and shared understanding. When someone shared their thoughts, others offered encouragement or bravely added their own experiences. It was a powerful reminder of the strength of community and what it means to lift each other up.

For me, this summit was about creating a space where these girls could feel valued and supported, and where they could walk away knowing that they matter, not just to others, but to themselves. It’s a reminder that when we offer spaces like this, we’re not just teaching tools; we’re helping to lay the foundation for something bigger.

They carry that energy into their families, friendships, and communities, becoming advocates for wellness and modeling what it looks like to care for one’s self and prioritize mental and emotional health."
