Embracing Disability Pride: Celebrating Intersectionality and Inclusion
In our journey towards a more inclusive and equitable society, it is vital that we recognize and celebrate the diverse identities and experiences of all individuals.
Disability Pride Month is celebrated each year in July. It is a movement that plays a crucial role in fostering empowerment, challenging societal biases, and promoting the intersectionality of disabilities with other identities. By embracing Disability Pride, we move towards a world where everyone feels valued, respected, and included. Join us for our upcoming free Pathways Forward webinar on July 12th at noon, where our host Lara Estaris, YWCA Spokane Equity Coordinator, will engage in a meaningful discussion with Erin Ferrier and Misha Lehmann from INDEX WA, to explore the powerful intersection of disability and LGBTQ+ identities.
The Significance of Disability Pride
Disability Pride is a movement that celebrates the uniqueness and contributions of individuals with disabilities, while also advocating for inclusion and accessibility. It is not simply about accepting and embracing one’s disability; it is a movement that seeks to dismantle ableism, challenge stereotypes, and advocate for equal rights and opportunities for individuals with disabilities. It encourages people with disabilities to take pride in their unique identities and accomplishments, while also educating society about the importance of inclusion and accessibility. Disability Pride Month provides us with an opportunity to challenge societal norms and promote a more inclusive future for all.
The Intersection of Disability and LGBTQ+ Identities
Our upcoming Pathways Forward webinar will delve into the intersectionality of disability and LGBTQ+ identities. By exploring this connection, we can gain a deeper understanding of the unique challenges faced by individuals who navigate both identities. Erin Ferrier and Misha Lehmann from INDEX WA will bring their expertise and personal experiences to the conversation, shedding light on the specific issues and needs of individuals at this intersection.
- Erin Ferrier: Erin is a passionate advocate for disability and LGBTQ+ rights. As Program Manager & Lead Independent Living Advocate at INDEx WA, Erin has worked to create inclusive spaces for individuals with disabilities while addressing the intersectional challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals within the disabled community. Erin’s insights and expertise make her a valuable resource for understanding the complexities of these identities and the importance of celebrating them.
- Misha Lehmann: Misha is an Outreach Advocate at INDEx WA and activist who identifies as both disabled and queer. Through their work, Misha has been instrumental in raising awareness about the unique struggles and triumphs experienced by individuals who navigate multiple marginalized identities. Misha’s perspective brings valuable insights into the barriers faced by the disabled LGBTQ+ community and the power of embracing this intersectionality.
